One Man Walking

2008-05-14 The broken line

If I had my GPS on today you’d have seen me running across a normally vehicle-only bridge at speeds of up to 70kph. That was pretty tiring obviously so I had to walk slower the rest of the time. Luckily there were no big hills to go over because despite two lazy days indoors my legs are still not feeling great. At least the rest of me is fine.

Well I say that but my brain is still doing bad things. I worked out some interesting facts today. My birthday will be my 98th day of walking. The fastest walk across Japan that I know of was Craig MacLachlan (not the guy from Neighbours) who did it in 99 days. When I leave Okaya the coastal route (crossing via Yamagata) is about 1500km. With 50 days that’s averaging 30km per day, which seems possible. And now I wish I didn’t know this.

The strangest thing today was a girl on a bike. While I was enjoying the mostly quiet country roads of Awaji Island she rode past on the other side. About 30m ahead she looked back, got off and began pushing her bike instead. Eventually I passed her and then she quickly rode ahead, got off and began pushing again. The second time I passed her she was gone for quite a while but shot by on a little downhill slope. In the next town I was buying ice-cream at the supermarket and she was there too! She got with 10ft of me and stopped. I could tell she was staring right at me though I kept my eyes on my coins. Then she was gone and I never got to find out if she thought I was someone famous or just generally amusing enough to stare at all day.

The second strangest thing was turning off the main road to walk between onion fields and farm houses only to discover the place where vending machines are born.

Word of the day: shi-ma = island

Estimated distance today: 40km

I would say don’t stress about the time. Should rush once in a life time thing :)
