One Man Walking

Neither crazy nor unique

February 7th, 2008 · No Comments

Imagine my surprise when I started researching how to get to my starting pointing at Cape Sata and discovered FourCornersOfJapan.net. This year two Australians are also walking the length of Japan and I may very well get to meet them on the trail. Chris and Ian are friends but are not walking together this time. Ian starts from the eastern tip of Hokkaido and Chris will be starting from Sata two weeks before I do. Reading their site is a little unnerving. Should I be pleased that two others have taken similar inspirations and come to the same conclusions or should I think that I’m now going to be the second foreigner through the little villages and mountain paths? I’m going with the first. There are more than enough mountains for all of us and I clearly have a lot in common with these loonies :-)
I won’t be landing in time to meet either of them before hand but I can imagine quite a get together afterwards. I’ve met a few people who thru-hiked the PCT in 1977, but none from the years surrounding that. Elements combined and public awareness grew to create a group team that year. One has to wonder if years from now we’ll be know as The Class of ‘08.
