I watched Kintaro Walks japan again last night and noticed things I didn’t spot before. He was wearing really heavy boots, big solid leather ones and the weather didn’t look like southern California. This second point should be obvious but it means this walk is going to need very different gear to the stuff I used on the PCT this year. There I had three months with only 2 days of rain. I basically gave up using a tent from mid June to mid September. But Japan is a set of thin mountains and rain comes often there. I’ve still got the dri-ducks that Potential 178 gave me and I’ll see how they hold up but expect to go find a proper rain jacket somewhere along the way. Another thing that really got me was that Tyler had a purpose. He was going for an adventure but he also gave himself a task to achieve other than just impressing his girlfriend. I don’t have such a purpose. I just want to get into the Japanese culture and have fun. There are easier ways to do this of course but walking seems to suit me. It’s not hard. Just one foot in front of the other. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. But why eat elephants when we have tv-diners and take-out? meph I don’t know. But it is what I’m going to do and maybe I’ll find some purpose as I go. Saving the whales appeals to me. But I doubt they’d take too kindly to me turning up and telling them to change their ways. It’s me that’s changing, not them.
